I know anyone who reads our blog is waiting for Boston's Birthday pictures, but JT and I have a deal. I write on the blog and he posts the pictures because I am so old school when it comes to technology.. so bottom line..he's being a slacker!!
Anyway, for days I have wanted to post a little tribute to MJ. Every time I would sit down to write it I would think "Nah..I'll get ridiculed for celebrating him so much." My sister just posted about Michael, and since I'm a follower, I thought I'd take the plunge.
My parents loved music. I think their generation produced some of the greatest. I was named after Carly Simon and I'm proud of it. There are many great musicians out there.. and then there was Michael. How could you not be mesmerized by him. I know I certainly was. I remember watching him moonwalk in the 80's and I even toted a little white glove on my hand for a moment in time. Everyone who knows me knows I loved Michael Jackson. My friend, Kim, whom I hadn't talked to in about 6 months called me after he passed. My friend Whitney busted through our front door to tell me the news and I was left speechless. Keith Stubbs, who I work with on the Eagle, said I was the first person he thought of after hearing of Michaels' passing.
One of my first Cd's was a Jackson 5 disc. His songs got me through so many hard times. I remember listening to his music in my bedroom and crying my eyes out, but walking away feeling stronger. I remember having a talent show with my friend Tyson and trying to dance to "Jam." His music left footprints on most of our childhood.
I truely believe that he was sent here on earth to do this special work. His message was one of love and hope. He gave to more charities than any other pop star. People want to hold on to the "eccentricities" the "allegations" but sometimes they forget about all the great gifts he gave us. We forget he was a human just like us. I'm so glad his daughter spoke at the end of his memorial because it humanized him so much.
He lived through so many hardships. The hand of his father as a child. Never being able to walk across the street in peace. We take things like going to the grocery store for granted all the time. He sacrificed a lot and I am so glad he is free from all of that now.
Honestly, I loved that he was different. He dared to be different. Today we have all these labels for people deemed different. I see this with Boston and it makes me sad. I wish people could just see his strengths and not focus on how he is labeled atypical. Being different gets things done.
I could go on and on why I love Michael's music. Why he was an inspiration to me; but I know everyone is sick of hearing all the hype.
I do think he deserved all the hype though. It's amazing how many people he touched. His words made this world a better place. My children and I have been dancing to his music lately in the kitchen. I love the smiles it brings to their faces. Michael said he wanted his music to be immortal and I certainly think it will be.
My favorite song is "Man in the Mirror" if you haven't listened to the words, I suggest you do and then tell me if you don't like MJ.
